RYU HOLDS NERVE FOR EPIC ONE-SHOT VICTORY

2015/03/17, Tuesday

Korean world No.8 So Yeon Ryu proved herself both sage and sensation as she captured the US$600,000 World Ladies Championship Sunday with a one-stroke victory over compatriot and world No.2 Inbee Park at Mission Hills Haikou in China.

The 24-year-old Ryu had on the first day of the event predicted she would win it this year and on the last day she duly delivered, recovering from a near-disastrous double-bogey six on the seventh hole to pick up three birdies down the back nine.

They included a three on the par-four 17th on Mission Hills Haikou’s signature par-73 Blackstone Course that put Ryu one stroke ahead of Park – a position she held to the clubhouse after matching her rival’s par on the last.

“I always love coming here. This is such a great resort and such a great golf course,” said Ryu, who signed for a four-under 69 and a winning total of 13-under 279. “I am just so honoured to have won here. I came third here last year and just really wanted to win.

“It was exciting playing today with Inbee and Suzann [Pettersen], who are two of the best players in the world. That really kept me on my game all day.

PARK FEELS THE HEAT FROM RYU AND PETTERSEN

Defending champion Inbee Park of Korea holds a one-shot lead after three rounds of the US$600,000 World Ladies Championship at Mission Hills Haikou in China but the two players who finished behind her last year are hot on her heels – and determined to wrest the title from the world No.2.

Park fired home a nervy two-under-par 71 Saturday which featured three bogeys when even one per round is a rare sight for the Korean star these days.

But five birdies across the distance took her to 10-under for the tournament and a one-stroke lead over compatriot and world No.8 So Yeon Ryu.

Ryu stormed up the leaderboard with an eight-under 65 sparked by a birdie on the first and an eagle three on the par-five second at Mission Hills Haikou’s Blackstone Course.

Ryu finished third behind Park and Norway’s world No.5 Suzann Pettersen last year and has made no secret of a fierce desire to win the event which is co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and the China LPGA Tour.

It’s a determination matched by Pettersen, who won the event in 2013 before finishing runner-up to Park last year, and she was on fire for much of Saturday, too, a six-under 67 taking her to joint third with China’s Janet Lin Xiyu.

But Park remains the player they all have to catch and she revealed after the round she had found the conditions testing as a brisk breeze picked up in the afternoon.

World No.2 Inbee Park and No.5 Suzann Pettersen will renew a rivalry for the ages when the US$600,000 World Ladies Championship tees off at Mission Hills Haikou on the tropical Chinese island of Hainan Thursday.

The head-to-head scorecard at Mission Hills between two of golfing history’s greats sits at one victory apiece as the pair have run one-two over the past two editions of the tournament.

Norway’s Pettersen won the World Ladies Championship in 2013 with Park finishing second, with the places being reversed last year when the Korean took home the trophy after the pair had traded shots – and strokes – across a scintillating final day’s play.

The two multiple Major winners are back in Hainan and ready for another battle across Mission Hills Haikou’s signature par-73 Blackstone Course as they sit at the head of a field packed with the best players from both the Ladies European Tour and the China LPGA Tour.

“This is the fourth staging of the World Ladies Championship and it promises to be the biggest and best yet,” said Mr Chu. “We have the cream of the Ladies European Tour, the best from the Chinese LPGA and some of the world’s best amateurs here. We are in for a week of thrilling golf.”

The World Ladies Championship is co-sponsored by global services company American Express; premium Italian lifestyle brand FILA; world-renowned bathroom brand TOTO; Dole, the world's largest producer and marketer of fresh fruit and vegetables; premium beer brand Stella Artois; premium sparkling fruit juice Appletiser; sparkling natural mineral water San Pellegrino; and Jacobsen turf equipment.
