China's Liu Jiao proved on Monday night
that she can win no matter the weather, as she captured her second
diving gold medal of the Youth Olympic Games in driving rain at
the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex.
With Chinese diving legend and
Olympic gold medallist Guo Jingjing watching from the stands, Liu
confidently soared through the raindrops to win the youth
women's 3m springboard with 511.35 points. The 17-year-old attacked
each of her final four dives from a rain-slicked board that seemed to
intimidate others in the field.
Not even a slight bobble on Liu's third
dive, an inward 2-1/2 somersault in pike position where her feet
seemed to fly out from underneath her as she sprang up from the
board, could deter her. Liu earned 70 points or better for
three of her four dives, all of which had a 3.0 degree of difficulty.
She was the only diver in the field to not include a dive of 2.9 or
less in her programme.
"There was no strategy (in doing
that), Liu said.
"I had no particular feelings
about diving in the rain (either). I just do everything normally, and
doing well in my dives is enough.
