Tokyo, Japan,
August 21, 2009: Russia
recovered from losing the first set to beat China 3-1
in the first match on the third day of the FIVB World Grand Prix
Final Round at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday afternoon.
The world champions beat China 27-29,
25-16, 25-19, 25-23 to improve their win-loss record to 2-1. China dropped to 0-3 with two games
to play.
CHINA
Head Coach Cai Bin: We lost
the game again, but my players did their best. We felt a lot of pressure
against Russia
over the net, and we could not block No. 15 (Kosheleva), whose spike was very
good. Also we could not stop Gamova, who was strong from both sides. That is
the reason why we lost today. Our serve and serve reception did not work well,
and when the ball was in a rally we could not win the point. We want to make
adjustments in the mistakes we made today.

Brazil sweep China in straight sets on 5th match point |

Tokyo, Japan,
August 20, 2009: Olympic champions Brazil
swept China
3-0 in the second match of the
second day of the FIVB World Grand Prix Final Round at Tokyo Metropolitan
Gymnasium on Thursday afternoon.
The seven-time Grand Prix
champions were much too fast and experienced for China, and sped to a 25-21,
25-20, 31-29 victory. But they had to save three set points in the third before
clinching on their fifth match ball.
With their latest success, Brazil improved their win-loss record to 2-0 and
dropped China,
the 2003 Grand Prix champions, to 0-2 with three games to play.
Press conference CHN Ming Xue, Qiuyue Wei and coach Bin Cai
Head Coach Cai Bin: Today
Brazil was too strong and their attack and receive worked well, and they had a
good rhythm. I saw Brazil-Russia yesterday and I think Brazil played
more constant than yesterday. Their spikes have a lot of variety and I feel
there is a difference between our team and Brazil. The players of China are still
young so I think we have potential to be better.
Captain Wei Qiuyue: We had
some chances to win (the third set), so I am very sorry to lose the game. It is
always difficult against Brazil,
so we practiced harder.
Xue Ming: Today we could not
play our style well, especially after serving and receiving we were lacking
attack power.
