As
a new Olympic cycle commences and with less than one year until the
Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Australian track cycling is celebrating a
world-topping performance at the 2017 UCI Track World Championships in
Hong Kong.
Australia
finished the five-day Championships with eleven medals - three gold,
five silver and three bronze across seven events - six more than Russia
who was second on the nation's rankings with five. Our women pocketed
six medals (two sprint and four endurance medals), while the men's
grabbed five medals including both pursuit crowns and the points race
title.
On the final day of competition on Sunday, Callum Scotson and Cameron Meyer added silver to the tally with a superb effort in the 200-lap war of attrition event, while Tasmania’s
Amy Cure, 24, is celebrating after becoming the first person in track
cycling history to win a medal in six different world championship
events.

Singapore Sevens 2017 Hong Kong reach Challenge Trophy Quarter Final |

Hong
Kong face a Challenge Trophy quarter-final clash with Scotland after
finishing day one of the Singapore Sevens on a high with victory over
Russia.
The
26-19 win followed a disappointing start to the day for Hong Kong,
with a 40-0 loss to Fiji in game one coming before a 34-0 loss to
Canada.
“Scotland
are a really good side, hopefully the win over Russia is a bit of a
confidence booster fortomorrow,” Hong Kong coach Paul John said.
Hong
Kong played with composure in the win over Russia, at one stage
leading 26-12 on the back of tries to Salom Yiu Kam-shing, Jamie
Hood, Toby Fenn and Cado Lee Ka-to.
“I
am pleased with the way the boys played and our attitude in the whole
game was great,” John said.
“The
boys just showed what they can do. Sevens is such a fine line between
winning and losing sometimes.
“When
we put them in doubt because we had a good start and we scored a try,
it’s a massive momentum swing.
“Maintaining
that momentum is huge and all you have got to do then is go back to
doing what you’re good at, not doing something that you’re not
good at.”
John
is enjoying his first chance at coaching Hong Kong on the HSBC World
Sevens Series and hopes his players can continue to back themselves
on day two.
